Back to: Artificial Intelligence (AI), Environmental Protection, Vibe Coding,

I tried vibe coding. I don't like it.

I know a whole lot of devs. Most of my friends are devs of some sort, or at least work in tech. AI is heavily normalised in my environment. People using agents to code, people using agents to write readmes they hate doing themselves, people using agents to check for bugs. There's often a vibe of "Why not just get [insert AI agent here] to do it for you?".

So I did. I thought hey I am making a website using Digital Garden and I have a mostly functional personal Obsidian theme I have been using. Why not get an AI agent to spit me out a Digital Garden compatible version of my own Obsidian theme? I mean, I made it, afterall. I'm not getting it to make something new. But then scope creep happened because Digital Garden is weird and things don't translate one-to-one and I did start prompting new things. And then the new things needed revising and reprompting and trawling through myself and when I exited my ADHD-fuelled AI-bro-themed fugue state, I realised I felt really uncomfortable.

My first instinct when I am uncomfortable is to delete everything, berate myself, puke from the stress and embarrassment and shame, and then sleep for six hours regardless of the time. Unfortunately, this goes against the values I am trying to begin to embody - namely accountability, transparency, and humility - and that means Git gets to record all sins for your perusal.

What now?

For now, I'm just going to use someone else's theme. Then, when I have time, I might change bits and pieces. But honestly, frontend is not my thing and I think pressuring myself to do that part when I am not really into it is counterproductive.

I do think AI has its uses (though significantly fewer than posited), but this just ain't it for me.
